Atmospheric and vacuum residue (AR/VR) desulfurisation prepares residue fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) feeds and produces additional diesel and low sulfur fuels. Advanced residue hydrodesulfurization (RDS) improves conversion operations and squeezes the maximum out of the bottom-of-the-barrel, thus maximizes the refinery’s profitability.

Axens offers a full range of first-rate RDS catalysts to improve RDS unit performance and economics. Axens latest generation residue catalysts enables refiners to:

  • convert a part of the feedstock to diesel,
  • produce low and ultra-low sulfur fuel oils,
  • improve RFCC feed quality to limit RFCC catalyst consumption, to increase gasoline and propylene yields, and to improve product quality.

RDS units include a number of reactors in series, each with a dedicated function. These units require a tailored catalyst system characterized by three reaction zones where the types and quantities of each catalyst are determined as a function of the feedstock difficulty and the objectives of the unit: HDM (hydrodemetallization), Transition zone and HDS (hydrodesulfurization).
