Axens, a global leader of process technologies for refining, petrochemicals and circular economy applications, has been selected by a U.S.-based investor and project developer to provide a Process Design Package for a hydroprocessing unit designed to process 100% tire pyrolysis oil (TPO).
The project includes a local end-of-life tire valorization facility incorporating pyrolysis technology and a TPO-upgrading hydroprocessing unit. The unit will produce low-sulfur fuel for the local market, with a maximum sulfur content of 500 ppm. The project is currently in FEED phase with Final Investment Decision (FID) expected in 2027. The Process Design Package has been tailored to the project's specific product quality targets and site conditions, leveraging Axens' hydroprocessing expertise and catalyst portfolio to maximize operational performance and product quality.
In selecting Axens, the project developer considered the company's experience in hydroprocessing and upgrading projects involving alternative feedstocks. The selection builds on Axens' track record across more than 300 proven hydroprocessing references worldwide, spanning a range of applications including Distillate Hydrotreating (Prime-D™), Waste Lube Recycling (Revivoil™), and Waste Plastic Pyrolysis Oil Hydroprocessing (Rewind Mix™). The client notably recognized Axens’ ability to address the specific challenges of tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) processing and impurity management. As a recognized experienced technology licensor with broad experience in hydroprocessing, combined with its proven ability to lead and successfully deliver projects of this nature, was a key factor in the selection decision.
Beyond its economic benefits, by converting end-of-life tires into valuable products, the project helps address a growing waste management challenge while supporting the development of more resource-efficient value chains. The project will contribute to the conversion of end-of-life tires into valuable transportation fuels, supporting local economy objectives.
