Energy Efficiency Improvement

The energy sector represents 66.5% of total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, 6.4% of GHG are produced by Oil and Gas extraction, refining & processing activities and 4.1% by chemicals and petrochemicals1.

The Kyoto Protocol, adopted on 11 December 1997 and entered into force on 16 February 2005, has been ratified by 187 countries as of July 20092 in order to address Climate Change. The major feature of the Kyoto Protocol is that it sets binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European community (Annex I parties) for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 5.2% of their 1990 levels over the five-year period 2008-2012.

To meet future energy challenges and comply with the GHG emission limitations, refineries will need to implement a combination of new technologies, energy efficiency improvements and projects such as CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) or JI (Joint Implementation).

Axens Heater Energy Efficiency Improvement 

Heaters are one of the biggest energy consumers in the refinery. Axens can assist for the analysis and consumption reduction by:

  • optimizing heaters operation and control,
  • performing preventive maintenance,
  • modifying convection section,
  • installing an Air Pre Heating (APH) system (FAST approach).


Axens Fuel Advanced Savings Technology (FAST)

Fuel Advanced Savings Technology (FAST) provides operators the capability to increase heater efficiency to levels never seen before. By utilizing clear channel technology in cross and counter flow, FAST obtains high efficient heat transfer and, at the same time, reduces the risk of fouling. Fuel Savings Technology utilizes a special coating that allows for operation below the ACID Dew Point (ADP) to overcome the corrosion problems experienced in many high efficiency applications.

FAST is a flexible approach that can be applied to all services and components, in particular the air preheater by using different materials, plate thicknesses and coatings. FAST can be applied to both new and existing equipment.

 Three stage action plan

The Fuel Advanced Savings Technology (FAST) approach uses a Three Stage action plan.

  • Stage 1 : Heater efficiency evaluation

Axens Horizon has developed “FAST-CALC” to aid operators in making quick efficiency and economic evaluations. Its program allows operators to evaluate the thermal efficiency gains that can be expected by a FAST upgrade. The program also provides budgetary numbers that will allow operators to develop a quick COST-BENEFIT evaluation of implementing real change that has a return on investment.

  • Stage 2 : FAST-study

In stage 2, Heurtey Petrochem Solutions’ team of experts will study the entire Furnace from a process, thermal, mechanical, operational and maintenance stand point. The result of the stage 2 study will be a report that will validate the efficiency improvement, provide new operational parameters and make mechanical recommendations that will form the plans for supplying FAST.

  • Stage 3 : Equipment supply & implementation

Based on the requirements of the study, Heurtey Petrochem Solutions’ team of experienced Engineers and Designers will develop the detailed calculations and drawings required to implement FAST. Axens Project Team works directly with the operator to define execution risks and implement plans to ensure success of the project. Axens Global Procurement Group engages strategic sourcing to support stage 3 ensuring that materials are competitively supplied in accordance with the quality expectations of the operator.
